What Simulation, Hardcore and Companion each change, and why "Realistic" is not a fourth option.

A mode is a broad statement about how the story should behave. A conversation can carry more than one at a time.

There is a fourth value, realistic, but it is not a separate mode. It expands into all three of the above. Source: shared/types.ts:855 for the type, shared/types.ts:859 normalizeChatModes for the expansion.

  • Simulation: The living world keeps moving. Time passes, other things happen, the scene has its own momentum.
  • Hardcore: Consequences are permanent. What happens is not quietly undone to keep things comfortable.
  • Companion: A deep ongoing relationship. The emphasis is on continuity with one person over a long stretch.

Where you set them

Modes are a nudge, not a mechanic. If you want the world to literally advance on its own, that is the Living world toggle rather than Simulation mode. See World toggles.

  • When starting a chat, in the setup dialog, unless you have turned that dialog off in Settings.
  • Mid-conversation, from the chat header settings.
  • For a whole multiplayer room, from the host settings panel. See Multiplayer.
