Against a self-hosted front end · Chazz.ai
Self-hosting a roleplay front end against using Chazz.ai: what running it yourself buys you, what it costs in time and hardware, and why cards being portable makes the choice reversible.
Running a front end yourself buys total control, total privacy and no content policy but your own, at the cost of setup, maintenance, and either hardware or API keys. Chazz.ai is hosted and cannot be self-hosted. Because character cards are portable in both directions, the choice is reversible rather than a lock-in.
What self-hosting genuinely wins
- Your data never leaves your machine. Nothing on this page beats that, and we will not pretend otherwise.
- Any model you can run or pay for, including ones no hosted service will offer.
- No policy but your own.
- No per-action cost once the hardware is paid for.
What it costs
- Setup and upkeep, which is real time, repeatedly, forever.
- Hardware capable of the model you want, or API keys, which is the same running cost wearing a different hat.
- Nothing shared. No multiplayer, no marketplace, no library, nobody else's work to start from.
- You are the moderation, the backup and the support desk.
Where Chazz.ai sits
Hosted, with no self-hosted build and no plan for one. What it offers against that is the shared half: a library, a marketplace, multiplayer rooms, narration, and a credit balance that works across every surface. Conversations are encrypted at rest under per-owner keys, which is a meaningful protection and still not the same guarantee as the data never leaving your house.
Cards import and export in the standard portable format, so trying this and going back to a local setup costs an export. That is deliberate. A service that is hard to leave is a service that has stopped competing on being good.
Questions
- Can I self-host Chazz.ai?
- No. It is a hosted service with no self-hosted build. Character cards import and export in the standard portable format, so moving between it and a local setup is straightforward.
